A. The Public Workshop is a cultural pavilion designed at the edge of Tempe Town Lake. The idea was to create a flexible place where art, community and the landscape come together. Instead of defining a fixed program, the project encourages open use so workshops, small exhibitions, gatherings and moments of rest can happen naturally. The design works with the desert climate and the slow atmosphere of the lake, using light, shade and open air to shape the experience of being there.

B. The layout is organized around two main zones, one focused on making and another on showing. Studios, courtyards, shaded paths and a central open gallery form a sequence of indoor and outdoor spaces that connect through simple transitions. Circulation is open and intuitive, giving visitors freedom to move, pause and look out toward the water. The floor plan follows the natural pedestrian flow of the site, respecting the existing trails and soft topography.

C. Materials combine raw and clean elements that respond to the desert environment. Thick textured walls help control heat, while perforated metal screens filter sunlight and create shifting shadows throughout the day. The structure remains light and expressive, with arched openings and layered surfaces adding depth without overpowering the landscape. Together, these decisions turn the pavilion into a calm and adaptable place that supports creativity, community and quiet reflection.
